Desgining and buliding an open source telescope

This project is focused on building an Ultrascope Explorer (an open source telescope) using 3D printing and laser cutting technologies, extending its capabilities by adding new features and ultimately designing and building a different size (bigger) telescope with remote access and control capabilities. This is a unique multidisciplinary research project that includes collaboration between faculty from engineering, IST, Physics (astronomy), and a group of engineering students. The research aspects of the project include engineering design, 3D printing/production, software and hardware design, and teamwork.

Designing and Building a Telescope Base

Project Objectives: Design a base for an existing telescope, using 3D printing and laser cutting technologies that will allow the direction and angle of the telescope to be remotely controlled. Remote access is done through an Internet app. The research project provides an activity where you learn how to develop engineering, problem solving, and programming skills through hands-on experience that includes production and assembly.

Minimum qualifications: 2nd year engineering student. Knowledge/familiarity with SolidWorks (for the design part); Programming experience (for the app design)



3-D Printer Based Robotics

Design and build 3D-printer based small robots with programming capability, incorporating navigational and touch sensors.

3-D Printer Based Quadcopter

Design and build 3D-printer based quadcopters with image processing capability.
